History and function

The Musikgeschichtliche Kommission was founded in 1953. It is a registered association which, according to its statutes, pursues the task of continuing the publication of German musical sources. The commission's tasks also include the work associated with these projects or which serves to prepare them. In particular, this includes the publication of treatises, collections of sources, documentation, etc.

On the one hand, the Musikgeschichtliche Kommission is responsible for the Erbe deutscher Musik, a source publication founded in 1933 as a successor to Denkmäler deutscher Tonkunst (published 1892-1931). When the commission was re-established in 1953, the name was deliberately retained in order to keep the project recognisable in its entirety. The project is funded by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities as part of the joint financing of musical editions. On the other hand, the Musikgeschichtliche Kommission looks after the Musikgeschichtliches Archiv, the world's largest film collection of music-historical sources. The editorial office for the Erbe deutscher Musik has its headquarters at the DMgA in Kassel since 2024.
